Participate Learning is a collection of apps for education, organized by grade and subject area. If you find a ( free!) application that you want installed on your student iPads, let Brie know Like Kahoot, Wizer.me is technically a web app. It allows you to create self-grading worksheets for students to fill out electronically. The worksheet can include multiple choice, matching, open questions, fill in the blanks, label an image, videos, text, images, voice instructions.... and they keep adding more features. You can set it up so the worksheets tell the students their grade immediately, or just saves it for you.
Students can be given a link to the worksheet in one of three ways : through Google Classroom, as a link, or as a pin code. Using Google Classroom is the easiest -- Wizer.me creates an assignment for the students, and the kids just click on the link. They'll be automatically logged in and ready to go. To use a pin code, students go to app.wizer.me/learn and type in the code ( you could save this link to their homescreen, or create a QR code for it if typing in the web address would be too difficult for your students ). Be warned that the PIN is case-sensitive! Once they type the pin, they'll have to log in to Wizer.me. They don't actually need an email ( though they can just sign in with their Google account ), but will be asked for their first and last name, and to make up a password. If you give them a link, they'll have to sign in as well. Admittedly, setting up the worksheets the first time can be a bit of a pain. But once you get the hang of it, you can do them pretty quickly, and you save both paper and time grading. You can also print out a report of the student's worksheet if you need something to send home. ReadingEggs and ReadingEggspress are technically the same app ( ReadingEggs ) -- it's just that when kids login, they get to choose which program to work on. ReadingEggs is designed for children under 7, while ReadingEggspess is designed for 7+.
Both apps start with a pre-test to place kids ability level, and go from there. ReadingEggs primarily teaches phonics and sightwords ; ReadingEggspress focuses more on comprehension and grammar. On both apps, kids progress through a variety of reading lessons, earning golden eggs for their work; the eggs may then be used to buy items for their character, or play games in the arcade. ReadingEggs also does some sightword assessments ( under 'Driving Tests' ), and both offer a spelling program. ReadingEggspress also allows students to play grammar and spelling games against other kids around the world, at other UCPs, or just against their class. Both apps also include a free library of ebooks for students to read, usually with a short multiple choice quiz every chapter ( worth eggs, of course :) ) Because this is a paid app, your children must have an account. Email Brie to get your class signed up. What is Kahoot? Kahoot is a program that lets you create learning games ( kahoots ) that allow children to answer multiple choice questions in a game show-like setting. Questions and answer choices are displayed on the smartboard, and kids use their iPads to answer the questions. They receive points for correct answers ( and more points for faster answers ), and you can download a spreadsheet summarizing the results at the end of the game.
Kahoot is technically a web-app instead of an iPad app. To access it, kids will need to use a web browser like Safari or Chrome. You will also need a smartboard to display the question and answer choices. As a teacher, you first need to go to getkahoot.com and create a free login. You can search for kahoots that other users have created, or make your own. Questions can include images, videos, or just words. Answers can only be words. Once you have a kahoot created, hook up the computer to the smartboard and play it ( if you can't find your kahoot, look for the "my kahoots" button in the top left corner ) by selecting your kahoot, pressing PLAY and then pressing LAUNCH. Feel free to play around with the options! Kids will need to go to kahoot.it on a web browser and type in the 6 digit PIN. They will then be prompted to input their name. Names of players will display on the smartboard. When you're reading to go, press START and have fun! |
